We know for the most part that whole based foods are best… but do you know why?
Synthetic/isolated nutrients are either attempted to be isolated from whole foods or created by a scientist in a lab coat, and then injected into our foods as additives or created into multivitamins. These nutrients just don’t react the same way inside our bodies as those derived from whole foods.
Why do you think your urine is bright yellow when all you take is a small pill? Your body doesn’t really know how or what to do with such a high level of synthetic vitamins, so it just excretes them.
When you eat whole foods the way nature intended us to… like the nutrients in fruits and vegetables, the nutrients work in synergy with one another and allow for proper absorption into your body.
Did you know a carrot has over 200 different nutrients that work together to make it a carrot? Trying to isolate a single nutrient from a carrot, and then enrich other foods with that nutrient doesn’t quite work out. Our bodies are thinking… Wait, where are the 199 other nutrients usually in this package?
You’ve probably heard me talk about nutrient deficiency. When the trillion cells in your body (which collectively make up your metabolism) don’t have the vitamins, minerals, pro-biotics, pre-biotics, phyto-chemicals, digestive enzymes they need to perform trillions of chemical reactions, everything slows down. This wrecks havoc on our bodies, slows calorie burn, and makes you feel exhausted.
When you start purchasing foods that have been manipulated and no longer look the way nature intended them, often times the item has been sliced and diced eliminating some version of nutrients. Synthetic nutrients are then added and the label reads that there are plenty of vitamins in the food.
Your body is not fooled.
Truth being told you’ll never really know the full nutrient profile of an orange for example. Each one is different based on where it grows, how nutrient rich the soil is and dozens of other things.
Don’t get me wrong, supplementation is definitely needed at times. Generally that is more than likely prescribed by your doctor. In these cases, you should follow their advice because they honestly know best. Just like vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) supplementation during pregnancy.
Speaking of supplementation, you've heard me talk about Shakeology off and on. People often ask me how many vitamins are in Shakeology or what makes it so much better than the other stuff? I am a big proponent for Shakeology because of what it’s done for my family and team.
Shakeology is a whole food product. There are over 70 different whole foods included in these shakes, with a full array of the vitamins and minerals you need daily. It’s not synthetic based like you will find in most of the other shakes out there. Let’s face it, it’s expensive…. so why not cut the price down and reduce quality to sell more of it? No chance, not with Shakeology. You get what you pay for.
That’s why you’ll never have a complete locked in percentage for those nutrients… but what you will know is the reason why you feel so great while drinking it, is because your body can actually use the nutrients that you get from the whole foods inside.
I don’t post this up to scare you, I just want you to be aware of it. Often times just being aware is more than enough to help us out in the future.
